TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

Workshop on Integrating GCDB into your GIS Framework

Tuesday, May 9, 8:30am - 4:30pm

Conference Rooms 1& 2 (by the cafeteria)
Federal Building, 2800 Cottage Way, Sacramento, CA
Sponsored by: US Geological Survey US Bureau of Land Management

This workshop will cover:

  • The foundation of the Public Land Survey System (PLSS)
  • The foundation of the Geographic Coordinate Data Base (GCDB)
  • The foundation of the National Integrated Land System (NILS)
  • Introduction to the Land Survey Information systems (LSIS)
  • Existing boundary alignment issues
  • How to contribute to and improve GCDB
  • How to access the LSIS web based interface
  • How to stream LSIS Web Map Services into ArcMap
  • How to download GCDB data, and related BLM shape, and coverage files
  • How to convert GCDB data to coverages and geodatabases
  • How to adjust local boundaries to be coincident with GCDB
  • How to maintain boundaries as GCDB is updated
  • See examples of how you can benefit through the use of GCDB

The morning session will provide a high level overview of the public land survey system, the current and future methods of integrating related geographic coordinates (GCDB) into your Geographic Information System (GIS), and the benefits of doing so. The afternoon session will cover the technical aspects using real world examples of acquiring GCDB data, and using it to create coverages and geodatabases.

The use of GCDB as a common framework for all PLSS based boundaries will improve your data quality, reduce your data acquisition and maintenance costs, and improve data sharing among the GIS community. Some counties in California are already yielding benefits through the use of GCDB in their GIS. Please join us for this free workshop. Contact Carol Ostergren at costergren@usgs.gov (916-278-9510) for reservations or further information.
